Remarks by President Yoon Suk Yeol at the G20 Summit Session I “One Earth”

2023.09.09

[Unofficial Translation]

Your Excellencies, representatives from international organizations,

I am pleased to meet all of you.

First of all, I welcome the African Union to this One Earth session as a new member of the G20.

Climate change-induced natural disasters are threatening the safety and freedom of people around the world.

Coping with these crises require strong solidarity and cooperation from the entire international community.

The G20 spearheaded efforts to tackle the global financial crisis, and it can also play an important role in responding to the climate crisis.

The Republic of Korea will serve as a “green ladder” to support countries vulnerable to climate change.

To this end, we plan to commit an additional US$300 million in donations to the Global Climate Fund to help developing countries adapt to climate change and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

We look forward to the G20’s active contributions to the GCF.

The Republic of Korea will also be at the forefront of spreading green technology and know-how.

Notably, the Climate Technology Centre and Network Partnership and Liaison Office, which opened in Korea last year, will contribute to disseminating green technology along with the Global Green Growth Institute and the Green Climate Fund.

In addition, the Republic of Korea will spearhead the transition to clean energy centered on nuclear power generation and hydrogen energy.

The Republic of Korea, which possesses world-class nuclear power plant technology, is also expediting the development of small modular reactors, the next-generation nuclear power plant.

We hope to enhance nuclear energy cooperation with countries seeking to strengthen energy security and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Moreover, to lead the hydrogen economy, the Republic of Korea – home to the world’s largest number of hydrogen vehicles in operation – will be at the forefront of international collaboration for technology cooperation and the establishment of relevant international standards throughout the full cycle of production and utilization.

G20 President,

Your Excellencies,

Decarbonization efforts in international shipping are critical to achieving the 2050 carbon neutrality goal.

The key to ocean carbon neutrality, or international shipping’s decarbonization, is the establishment of green shipping corridors.

The Republic of Korea will pursue eco-friendly shipping solutions that encompass the development of low-carbon and zero-carbon ships and the construction of eco-friendly port infrastructure.

The eco-friendly shipping solutions to be led by the Republic of Korea will contribute to linking ports around the world to green shipping routes.

All countries must stand in solidarity and cooperate to protect our one and only Earth.

The Republic of Korea will actively participate in the global efforts for One Earth through the three pledges outlined earlier.

Thank you.
