Remarks by President Yoon Suk Yeol at the Korea-U.K. Summit

2023.11.22

[Unofficial Translation]

I would first like to thank you sincerely for the warm hospitality. It is very moving to come to this historic site, 10 Downing Street. As I understand it, Sir Robert Walpole began to use this location as the official residence of the British Prime Minister around the time the principle of the British monarch reigning but not ruling was established and parliamentary democracy centering on the Liberal and Conservative parties began to take root.

Yesterday, I visited the Korean War Memorial in front of the Ministry of Defence and also the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior in Westminster Abbey. This morning, I attended the U.K.-Korea Business Forum held at Mansion House in the City of London and visited the Royal Society where Korean and British scientists discussed ways to collaborate.

Here at 10 Downing Street today, Korea and the United Kingdom will sign the Downing Street Accord. As the ties between our two countries are forged in blood, I believe that there is nothing we cannot do when it comes to economic cooperation or indeed collaboration in science and technology.

Negotiations to upgrade the Korea-U.K. FTA will begin soon and the relevant declaration was already made this morning. I look forward to Korea and the United Kingdom, duly defining our economic cooperation in terms of universal norms, demonstrating collective leadership in the pursuit of global peace and prosperity.
