Remarks by President Yoon Suk Yeol at a Meeting with Dutch Korean War Veterans

2023.12.13

[Unofficial Translation]

I am delighted to meet with Korean War veterans here as the first Korean President to make a state visit since our two countries established diplomatic relations. It is also an immense personal honor to meet you all.

We are also joined today by the family members of the veterans, including those we have lost, along with many relevant officials. First of all, I pay tribute to Lieutenant Colonel Marinus den Ouden and the other Dutch Korean War veterans who gave their lives to defend the freedom of the Republic of Korea. May their souls rest in peace.

Shortly after the outbreak of the Korean War, the Netherlands actively supported the U.N. Security Council resolution to provide military aid and quickly resolved to send troops to a little-known country. Notably, the Dutch people urged the dispatch of ground troops, and many of its citizens, especially young men, volunteered to fight. Among the 22 U.N. member states that participated in the war, the Netherlands was among the first four countries to send troops, following the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia. During the Korean War, 5,322 Dutch soldiers pulled off numerous feats while fighting in the battles of Hoengseong and Inje, among many others.

The fierce battles fought by Dutch veterans are covered in the Korea Military Academy’s curriculum for war history, and the cadets there – who comprise our future officers – still study them avidly.

The sacrifices and dedication of those veterans have made it possible for the Republic of Korea to rise above the ruins of war and now enjoy freedom, peace and prosperity. A total of 122 Dutch Korean War veterans are now resting in peace at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Busan. The Korean government and people have never forgotten the blood shed by those young Dutchmen who fought against the communist invasion 70 years ago, and it is such gratitude that keeps the solidarity between our two countries strong.

I would like to thank all of you once more for gracing today’s event with your presence. I would also like to extend my sincere gratitude to His Majesty King Willem-Alexander once again for arranging this precious opportunity.
