Opening Remarks by President Yoon Suk Yeol during His Visit to ASML Headquarters in the Netherlands

2023.12.12

[Unofficial Translation]

Your Majesty, Mr. Wennink, thank you for your warm welcome.

Mr. Wennink, Peter, we have already met twice, and each time I met with you I became more and more curious about ASML’s headquarters and facilities. I really wanted to be here, and it is even more meaningful that I am here today with His Majesty the King. As a matter of fact, this is also my very first visit to a foreign company abroad as President.

Peter, under your leadership, ASML and its partners innovated the semiconductor industry, moving into the era of a chip-manufacturing process which is just a few nanometers large. This innovation in the semiconductor sector is a major driver of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, pushing the boundaries in areas like Artificial Intelligence, 5G and new mobility.

So I thank you, Peter, for your years of effort and dedication, and at the same time, I would like to congratulate Mr. Christophe Fouquet on taking up the position of the next CEO, starting next April. I will count on your effort to maintain a close partnership between ASML and Korean manufacturers in order to bring about further innovation in the industry and stabilize global supply chains.

Under the Korean government’s strategy for becoming a semiconductor superpower, we are forming the largest microchip cluster in Korea, including through Samsung Electronics’ 360 trillion won investment and the 120 trillion won investment by SK Hynix. Companies like ASML and ASM are also taking part in this project by investing in new facilities for manufacturing, R&D and training human resources. I would once again like to thank each and every one of you.

I am delighted that today, ASML is announcing its new collaboration plan with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. ASML and Samsung Electronics are investing 1 trillion won in building an R&D center in Korea for next-generation chip fabrication technology. ASML and SK Hynix agreed to develop ways to reuse hydrogen gas, which will enable us to not only move toward an eco-friendly process but also significantly enhance energy efficiency.

Also, the “Korea-Netherlands advanced semiconductor academy” will take place for the first time next February with Korean and Dutch students and engineers participating thanks to the leadership of ASML. The fact that together our two countries will train our future generations who will lead the global chip industry makes this meaningful program more special.

In order to guarantee the success of all the joint projects mentioned, the Korean government will closely communicate with the Dutch government and offer all necessary support. With the hope that today’s meeting will serve as another opportunity to further solidify the “semiconductor alliance” between Korea and the Netherlands, I look forward to a fruitful discussion today.

Thank you.
