「National AI Security Consultative Group」Launched

- Office of the President holds a consultative meeting to discuss AI security issues

- Reviewed related ministries and organizations’ responses to AI security threats and established a collaborative network

The Office of National Security convened a joint meeting on March 28 at the Yongsan Presidential Office, chaired by Deputy National Security Advisor Yunjong Wang, to discuss a comprehensive national response to security threats posed by artificial intelligence (AI). Officials at the director-general level from seven government agencies* participated in the meeting.

The meeting primarily focused on emerging security issues stemming from rapidly advancing AI technologies, including the recent proliferation of generative AI.

DNSA Wang highlighted that while AI technologies are driving innovation across a wide range of sectors, they simultaneously pose substantial risks, particularly through potential misuse or loss of control of AI systems. He stressed that proactive, national-level responses are essential to address these evolving threats.

The participants agreed to employ this newly established intergovernmental consultative body to foster swift, coordinated policymaking and information sharing on AI security issues, ensuring an integrated and systematic approach to counter AI-related security challenges.

During this inaugural session, attendees assessed the current state of AI security threats, reviewed related ministries' responses, and engaged in in-depth discussions on future areas of collaboration.

The Office of National Security will convene this consultative body whenever inter-ministerial coordination is required - particularly for critical issues such as risk assessments of AI technologies from a national security standpoint.

To further enhance collaboration, a dedicated working group composed of public institutions with AI expertise will be formed. For efficient management, the National Intelligence Service will serve as the secretariat, with provision for inviting academic and private-sector experts to contribute as needed.

The National AI Security Consultative Group will serve as a foundation for robust, whole-of-government collaboration to address AI security threats.
