First Lady Kim Keon Hee has been appointed honorary chairperson of the domestic charity group Community Chest of Korea (CCK).

She attended on April 11 the appointment ceremony for the organization's fifth honorary chairperson at the CCK building in Seoul, presidential spokesperson Lee Do Woon said in a news release.

The CCK has a tradition of naming the spouse of the incumbent president for the position.

"I'm honored to be a member of the Community Chest of Korea, which has cared for marginalized neighborhoods for 25 years," the first lady said. "I will also do more to deliver love and hope to all corners of our society."

At the event, she also thanked philanthropic families and those donating financial aid to earthquake-hit Turkiye (Turkey).

"Though our country has achieved rapid economic growth, many people still need support in all corners of society," she said. "Everyone here having a positive influence shows an example of mature citizenship."

CCK Chairman Kim Byong Joon mentioned the tendency of donation amounts to rise in difficult times, to which the first lady responded by urging the creation of a warm society where people make friends through sharing.

Spokesperson Lee said this was the first time for a first lady to attend a ceremony for her appointment as an honorary chairperson.

In her new role on the same day, she made a donation to support the recovery of Gangwon-do after massive forest fires.
