President Yoon showed sales diplomacy, boosted supply network during trip

2022.09.26

The results of President Yoon Suk Yeol's recent visits to the U.K., the U.S. and Canada from Sept. 18-24 have been announced.

The presidential office in Seoul on Sept. 25 said his trips to the three countries constituted economic diplomacy such as sales diplomacy, boosting of the supply network for high-tech industries, and creation of a foundation for cooperation in science and technology and future-growth sectors.

President Yoon left a deep impression of "strengthening of international solidarity for freedom," the focus of his foreign policy, at his keynote speech made to the 77th United Nations General Assembly in New York. In his speech, he suggested freedom and solidarity to resolve international issues amid changing times and expressed Korea's intent to actively help resolve main global issues such as energy, climate and health crises, and the digital divide.

His office also cited the president's attendance at the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II of England, saying, "President Yoon attended the state funeral and reconfirmed his intent to strengthen solidarity through talks with King Charles III and a meeting with new British Prime Minister Liz Truss."

"The British side thanked the president several times for his attendance at the state funeral."

The presidential office also cited as achievements during his trip combined investment of USD 1.15 billion from seven global corporations in the high-tech sector, setup of a global venture fund with the U.S. worth USD 220 million and USD 100 million in investments for about 40 startups at a startup summit event.

Also cited were President Yoon's talks with leaders of leading economies. In his summit with U.S. President Joe Biden, President Yoon expressed a willingness to cooperate with the White House in relation to the Inflation Reduction Act of the U.S., cooperation in financial stabilization and collaboration with leaders opposed to North Korea's expansion of its nuclear program.

President Yoon also held Korea's first summit with Japan in two years and nine months to seek improvement in bilateral relations. His tour also expedited discussions between diplomatic officials and led to the pledge of continued dialogue between both leaders, according to the presidential office.

He received the Canadian government's highest level of reception at the bilateral summit in Ottawa, the last leg of his trip. In their talks, Korea and Canada elevated their ties to the level of a "comprehensive strategic partnership."

The presidential office said the three countries the president visited all sent troops during the Korean War (1950-53) and that his tour strengthened the basis for cooperation with them.
